The walls of the Vatican Museums in Rome, an alternative to the Borghese Gallery

Borghese Gallery vs Vatican Museums: Which to Book

Updated October 27, 2026

Verdict

Book the Vatican Museums if the Sistine Chapel and Raphael's Rooms are why you came to Rome and you have half a day. Book the Borghese Gallery if you want Bernini's sculpture and Caravaggio in two hours, with at most 180 people in your slot. On a trip of three days or more, do both: the Borghese closes on Mondays and the Vatican on most Sundays, so between them one is open every day of the week, apart from holidays such as 25 December and 1 January.

The Borghese Gallery and the Vatican Museums are Rome's two museums that most need booking ahead, but they are very different visits. The Borghese is one villa with 20 rooms, seen in a two-hour timed slot capped at 180 people; it had 544,290 visitors in 2022. The Vatican Museums show about 20,000 works along a long route that ends in the Sistine Chapel, and had about 6.8 million visitors in 2024. One is closed on Mondays, the other on most Sundays. The table compares hours, price, time and art; the sections below cover crowds and how to do both.

Size and the time you need

The Borghese is small enough to see well in its two-hour slot: about an hour for the sculpture on the ground floor and an hour for the paintings upstairs. The Vatican Museums have no slot length but a much longer route, with the Sistine Chapel at the end; museivaticani.va asks visitors to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, so start well before the 6 pm last entry.

Crowds and timed entry

At the Borghese, each hourly slot takes at most 180 people, and the museum lets everyone in at the start of the hour; there is no fast-track lane. The Vatican Museums sell an online "Skip the Line" ticket for €25 (€20 + €5), on their own site at tickets.museivaticani.va. With about 6.8 million visitors in 2024 against about half a million at the Borghese in 2022, the Vatican is the busier visit.

The art: Bernini and Caravaggio, or Michelangelo and Raphael

Come to the Borghese for Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, David and The Rape of Proserpina, Canova's Pauline Bonaparte and six Caravaggios in one room. Go to the Vatican for Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling and altar wall, Raphael's Rooms and the ancient Laocoön, whose discovery in 1506 the museums count as their founding. Both have Caravaggio: six paintings at the Borghese, The Entombment of Christ in the Vatican Pinacoteca.

Price

Official prices are close: €18 at the Borghese (booking fee included) and €20 at the Vatican, or €25 booked online. Reduced and free rules differ: at the Borghese, ages 18–25 pay €2 + €2 and under-18s go free + €2 (EU citizens and equivalents). Booking partners sell Borghese tickets from $46, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which the official Borghese ticket does not allow.

Doing both, and the Doria Pamphilj

The two are about 4 km apart on foot, roughly 50–55 minutes (OpenStreetMap estimate), so most visitors put them on different days. A Sunday Borghese slot and a weekday Vatican visit avoid both closing days. If you want a third, smaller collection, the Doria Pamphilj Gallery on Via del Corso has three Caravaggios and Velázquez's Portrait of Innocent X.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Borghese Gallery better than the Vatican Museums?

It is smaller and calmer, not better or worse. Pick the Borghese for Bernini and Caravaggio in two hours with at most 180 people per slot; pick the Vatican for the Sistine Chapel and Raphael's Rooms over half a day.

Can I visit the Borghese Gallery and the Vatican Museums on the same day?

Yes, from Tuesday to Saturday, when both are open. They are about 4 km apart on foot (OpenStreetMap estimate), so book a Borghese slot that leaves time to cross the city and reach the Vatican before its 6 pm last entry.

Which is cheaper, the Borghese or the Vatican?

The Borghese: €18 (€16 + €2 booking fee), about $20, against €20 at the Vatican or €25 booked online.

Is the Vatican Museum worth it?

For the Sistine Chapel and Raphael's Rooms, it is the only place to see them. Plan half a day and avoid Sundays, when it is closed except on the last Sunday of the month.

Can you take photos in the Vatican Museums and the Borghese?

At the Borghese, yes for personal use, without flash, tripods or stands. For the Vatican Museums, check the rules on museivaticani.va before you go.
