What is the best time to visit the Borghese Gallery?
Updated October 27, 2026
Quick answer
Any slot gives the same crowd inside, because every slot is capped at 180 people. The best time is the one you can book: a full two-hour slot, booked early, on a day that is not a free day. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for pairing the gallery with the park.
Because entry is timed and capped, the Borghese does not have the rush hours of a walk-in museum. What changes from day to day is how hard a slot is to get and what the weather is like for the Villa Borghese park around it. The museum is closed every Monday, on 25 December and on 1 January.
Quietest slots
Every slot from 9 am to 5 pm gives you two hours with at most 180 people, so inside the rooms no hour is busier by rule than another. Everyone in a slot enters together at the start of the hour, so a short queue forms at the door; the museum says it moves quickly. The 5.45 pm slot is the cheapest at €13 (about $15) but lasts only 1 hour 15 minutes. A 9 am slot leaves the rest of the day for the park.
- 9 am to 5 pm slots — Two hours each, max 180 people, €18 (about $20)
- 5.45 pm slot — 1 hour 15 minutes, €13 (about $15)
- Last-minute at the office — From minute 20 of each hour, 1 hour 30 minutes, max 2 per person
Days to avoid
Mondays are closed. The first Sunday of the month, 25 April, 2 June and 4 November are free days: entry costs only the €2 fee, tickets go on sale 10 days before, and no last-minute tickets are sold. Inside, a free day is no fuller than any other day, because the 180-person cap still applies; the hard part is getting a ticket. Easter Monday (6 April in 2026) is closed like every Monday.
Season by season
The gallery is indoors, so the season matters mainly for the walk through Villa Borghese and the park gates, which close earlier in winter. Averages for Rome (1991-2020 normals):
- Spring (March to May) — Highs of 15-22 °C, about 8-9 rainy days a month; park gates close 7-9 pm from March
- Summer (June to August) — Highs of 27-31 °C, July the hottest and driest (26 mm); gates close 8-10 pm
- Autumn (September to November) — Highs of 26 °C falling to 16 °C; October is the wettest month (128 mm)
- Winter (December to February) — Highs of 11-13 °C; park gates close 5-7 pm
Booking lead time by month
The museum publishes no lead time for regular slots, but the Roma Pass FAQ advises booking the Borghese at least 10 days ahead and 20 days in high season. For a free day, be online when tickets open 10 days before. If the official calendar is full for your date, partner tickets hold slots and can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before; read how far ahead to book Borghese tickets for every option, or compare them on the Borghese Gallery tickets page. One gardens-tour reviewer visiting in July noted that the museum controls the crowds and that it was not too hot.
