Is there a dress code at the Borghese Gallery, and can you take bags?

Updated October 27, 2026

Quick answer

The Borghese Gallery publishes no dress code: its official visit, ticket and FAQ pages say nothing about clothing. The rules it does enforce are about bags and photos: only bags up to 21 x 15 cm go into the rooms, everything bigger goes in the cloakroom, and photos are allowed without flash or tripods.

The Borghese is a state museum in a former villa, so wear what is comfortable for two hours on your feet and the walk through the park. The museum is at Piazzale Scipione Borghese 5, inside Villa Borghese; for the full picture of your visit, see the Borghese Gallery visitor guide.

Dress code

There is none on the museum's published pages, and the partner listings do not mention one either. Comfortable shoes help: one partner tour warns of a fair amount of walking, because it adds the gardens. If you are also visiting churches or St Peter's the same day, dress for those instead.

Bag size and the cloakroom

Medium and large bags, shopping bags, backpacks and luggage are not allowed in the rooms. Only small pouches and handbags up to 21 x 15 cm (about 8 x 6 inches) go in with you. Everything else goes in the cloakroom at the entrance, which partner listings describe as free. The cloakroom takes only cabin-size trolley bags, for the length of your visit and only if there is space, with no guarantee. The cloakroom and toilets are for ticket holders; the bookshop and café can be used without a ticket.

  • Allowed inside — Small pouches and handbags up to 21 x 15 cm
  • Cloakroom — Backpacks, medium and large bags, shopping bags
  • Luggage — Cabin-size trolleys only, space permitting; leave large suitcases at your hotel

Photography rules

You can take photos for personal, non-commercial use. The museum's rules exclude flash, tripods, stands and any other light source, and you must not touch the works. During temporary exhibitions with loaned works, the museum can ban photos of those works. Commercial photography or filming needs the museum's authorisation.

Food, drink, strollers and other items

The museum's archived pages do not list food or stroller rules, but partner listings do for their guests: four of the gallery listings bar strollers or baby carriages, and one guided tour also bars pets, alcohol and sharp objects. The café on the lower floor is open 8.30 am to 7 pm. Entry is controlled for security at the start of each hour, so pack light and arrive a few minutes before your slot.
